"Fiorenza" founded by Romans in 59 BC Craft and commercial city since the dawn it has continued to prosper even with the invasions but it is with the Lordships of the Middle Ages that the power and fame of Florence grows between 1000 and 1400; a great number of craftsmen thrive: blacksmiths, leather workers, carpenters, shoemakers, weavers, goldsmiths. The guilds (including the Ciompi, the most modest and hardworking) are born. Guelfi and Ghibellini and then the Medici Grand Dukes of Tuscany and for 3 centuries Florence reached its maximum artistic and commercial splendor. 1700 the Lorraine for another 2 centuries until annexation to the Kingdom of Italy in 1860
