"Playing cards" were invented in China around the 8th century, from there they migrated westward to India and Persia. They were introduced to Europe by the so-called Saracens, the Muslims from the Mediterranean coasts of Africa and southern Spain, under the name Naibi. The first documented records of Playing Card and Tarot manufacturers date back to 1430, in the Archives of the Duchy in the Kingdom of Florence.
There are various theories about what their original purpose was; among the most accredited by historians is that it was a social game created to educate the children of high-ranking families about the rules imposed by the society of the time.
If today we ask someone: "What are Tarot cards?", the answer would be obvious: "A deck of cards to read the future." The investigation into the birth of Cartomancy is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating chapters in the history of Tarot. Some claim that they derive from the hieroglyphs of the Book of Thoth, and that they are a synthesis of Egyptian knowledge and religion. Others argue that their origin is Chinese, due to the various similarities with the I Ching, but these are considered theories without any certainty or historical reference. Among the first documented historical finds that speak of this discipline, we find a passage within the treatise Il De Rebus Praenotione (Strasbourg 1507), written by the philosopher Giovanni Francesco Pico della Mirandola (1469/1553), nephew of the famous cabalist Giovanni Pico, which talks about the many ways to "draw lots," in other words, to know the future. Moreover, Pico mentioned "figures painted in a card game."
Another important discovery is contained within a donation made to the University of Bologna, a collection of Masonic documents, among which there is also a manuscript listing the meaning attributed to each Tarot card. In addition to the historical finds that allow us to understand the importance of this tool within our society, it is precisely the mystery surrounding this medium that makes them so unique and fascinating and still allows us to use them not only to predict a hypothetical future, but also to give us the opportunity to meditate and embrace the changes that life places before us.
